Ultimate Money Blog created a challenged for 2011: declutter 365 items from your home. A decluttering challenge? Yes, please!
I went through a huge decluttering kick at the beginning of 2010. We were living with family and didn’t have much space of our own, so I figured decluttering would help us make the most of what little space we had. And it did! I purged quite a bit of our belongings – so much so that we moved out of that house with less than what we moved in with. While having less made moving into our new place easier, our new place has become home to new clutter.
Since we moved, we have received a lot of hand-me-down items from friends and family. I turn NOTHING down. I will accept just about anything from anyone. And if I don’t have a use for something? I do my best to pass it along to someone else or donate it to the local thrift store. We moved here in October, and I’m amazed at how much stuff we have accumulated already.
I am participating in the 365-items challenge not only to purge a bit more from our living space, but to remind myself that just because I purge something doesn’t mean I have to go out and buy something to replace whatever thingamabob I’ve purged. This challenge goes hand-in-hand with The Compact for me (which, for the record, I have bought nothing new so far this year – will blog about my rules soon).
Here is what I have decluttered so far:
1. A shirt
2. A blouse
3. A pair of pants
4. A picture frame
5. Pair of slippers
Five down, 360 to go!
Do you actively declutter your home/work space/etc.?
